For the Kids

Credit Union Membership is something that could be with a person from their first account until they retire.  When we say, “once a member, always a member”, we truly mean it.  When you open a Dollar Dog account for your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or anyone else, they become a member of AmeriChoice and get all the perks that come with Credit Union membership.

Our youngest members start out in the Dollar Dog club, which introduces them to the credit union, how a savings account works, a punch card for an account bonus or the option to pick a toy when they make a deposit, a special newsletter and so much more.  We want to teach the future that their Credit Union will be there for them starting at a young age.

Once your child reaches 13, their account automatically becomes part of the MyChoice Teen Club, which gives them the opportunity to use the account more and to open a checking account (once they reach 16).  We have in school branches that teens can access at Cedar Cliff and East Pennsboro High Schools that allows students to get more comfortable with using their accounts in a familiar setting before they head off on their own.

Similar to the Dollar Dog to MyChoice teen club, once your child reaches 18, their account is automatically added into our MoneyMatters club, which is designed for those 18-26 years old.  The MoneyMatters accounts are tailored to younger members to get their credit started.  They’ll be able to apply for their first VISA credit card, our Credit Boost Auto Loan and student loans.  We want to get young adults started off on the right foot with building their credit history and these programs are specifically designed for them.

Each of the 3 different youth accounts builds upon the others.  Our youngest members start out with just a savings account as a Dollar Dog Account, but soon become very comfortable and familiar with the branch and the staff and get excited about making their deposit and seeing how much they’ve saved.  When they’re old enough in the MyChoice teen club, we introduce a checking account and debit card, and many teens like to use mobile banking.  This allows them to start managing their own money and teaches responsibility and how to balance a checkbook.  And when they’re old enough to be in the MoneyMatters account, they have all the tools to start their credit out on the right foot, but if they have questions, they’ve built that relationship with us and can ask for guidance or help.

Credit Unions understand the importance of teaching children about finances and April marked Credit Union Youth Month, where we celebrate our youngest members and encourage them to become involved in their finances from a young age.  Like so many things over the past year, we took the event virtual.  We had a Facebook event page and a dedicated page on our website where participants were able to follow along and submit their activities in order to win a Kindle.  Don’t worry if you missed out, you have until May 14th to submit the activities to be entered to win.

Every July we look forward to our annual Family Fun Extravaganza.  As you remember, last year we took our annual event virtual to keep everyone safe and we’ve decided to do the same again this year.  We’ll have fun, games, snacks and activities for the whole family for an afternoon of fun to complete at your own pace.

We’ll open registration for our Family Fun Kits in June, keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more information and where to sign up!
